This presents a definite lack of uniformity between Microsoft Office applications and, as we can attest, can be a source of confusion, as it was for us. With both the viewport active and the Layer Properties palette open, scroll over to the right of the Layer Properties palette and you should now see more options than you would if you didn’t have a viewport active. Then open the Layer Properties dialog palette (command alias LA). To check to see if there any overrides, go to the layout tab and viewport where the override is and then double click inside the viewport to activate it. You can make the layer not show (as I think this is what you are dealing with) and also change the color, lineweight, linetype…) If you do not want these overrides, try using the command/system variable VPLAYEROVERRIDESMODE to 0 (zero).
It sounds like you have a “Viewport Layer Override” This is where you can control a layer’s properties within that single viewport.
